Madeline Myers shared a piece from her latest musical, The Devil’s Apprentice and told us about the rigor with which she approaches creative discipline. She taught us about the idea of an “I Want” song in musical musical theatre and asked that we consider what we most want in 2019 and to write a few lines about it to set to music.

Madeline is a composer and lyricist for musical theater. Madeline has created five musicals, the most recent which is The Devil’s Apprentice, that recently had its world premiere in Copenhagen. She is a 2019 York Theatre Company NEO Writer, a 2018 and 2017 Jonathan Larson Grant finalist, a 2018 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award semi-finalist, a 2018 and 2017 ASCAP Plus Award recipient, a 2016-2017 Dramatists Guild Fellow, and the first-place winner of the inaugural Ken Davenport Songwriting Competition.

Eskor Johnson shared with us a few pieces from a series of short stories, shared his experience coming to grips with the daunting reality of ‘being a writer’ and asked us to write a fictional origin story of an object in the room.

Eskor is a writer from Trinidad and Tobago. He’s studied the craft of literature and writing intensely among some of the best and the brightest at Harvard and Iowa Writers’ Workshop respectively and has a fascinating collection of experiences between and beyond his education. Most recently he has been putting the finishing touches on a novel, and his piece “My Mountain is Taller than All the Living Trees” was recently published by McSweeney’s

Alexandra Pinel & Lindsay Reuter are collaborating on a choreographic work that combines their superpowers and create an auditory dance experience—encouraging us to think about everything as dance (even brushing our teeth!) They unpacked their process and guided us to create our own imaginary dance.

Alexandra is a choreographer and performer from Paris, France. Alexandra works for Half Straddle, Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company, New York Public Radio and choreographer luciana achugar and has recently performed in her work at JACK, The Chocolate Factory, Fusebox Festival and New York Live Arts.

Lindsay (Londs) is a dancer and dance-maker based in Brooklyn, New York. Her choreographic work places privacy in public performance, to examine the everyday. Reuter has received support from New York Live Arts (Fresh Tracks 2014-2015), Danspace Project (Food for Thought), and Movement Research at the Judson Church. She has been in residence at Ponderosa (Queeries Residency) and the Space on Ryder Farm. She runs the Access Programs at the Brooklyn Museum, is on the Access Committee of the Tenement Museum, helped build and program the Brooklyn Studios for Dance, co-organizes CLASSCLASSCLASS, and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Disability Studies.
